Photographer Tahmineh Monzavi arrested in Iran

Tahmineh Monzavi, a 23-year-old photographer who studied at the Azad University's College of Arts and Architecture, has been arrested. According to Eric Cez and Anne Zweibaum of the Loco publishing house, it's unclear why she was arrested but they suspect it relates to Monzavi's work.

Back in November when New York police officers pushed protesters out of Zuccotti Park, many reporters were physically prevented from covering the events, ostensibly as a way to keep them safe. More here.

Why are the cops in NYC acting so stupid with photographers?
One would expect this kind of attitude in Syria, Libya or North Corea, not in New York...Or?

Stand Your Ground

On Tuesday 21 June 2011 six photographers were assigned different areas of the City to photograph. Some used tripods, some went hand held, one set up a 5 x 4.

All were instructed to keep to public land and photograph the area as they would on a normal day. The event aimed to test the policing of public and private space by private security firms and their reaction to photographers.

All six photographers were stopped on at least one occasion. Three encounters led to police action.

Treasures of the Rhone

Photographers Remi Benali and Patrick Landmann have spent 10 weeks working with Luc Long and a team of archaeologists and divers who have been excavating the Rhone River. The Roman Treasures that they have found, unseen for 2000 years, include a marble portrait of Julius Caesar, the only carved while he was alive, a gold-leaf statue of Victory and a bronze captive awaiting his death sentence. All are considered to be chefs d'oeuvres by the French Ministry of Culture and can be seen now at the Musée Départemental de l'Arles antique.

PHotoEspaña 2009 will take place from 3 June to 26 July. The Festival of Photography and Visual Arts will offer at this twelfth edition a proposal comprising 74 exhibitions, 31 in the Official Section, 7 in other venues and 35 in the Off Festival, spread in a total of 60 exhibition spaces such as museums, art galleries, art centres and exhibition rooms. 259 artists and creators of 40 nationalities will participate at the Festival.

Photographer Alain Pons has released a serie of photo guides of Tanzania, Namibia, Kenya, Botswana, and India. His models are tigers, bears, oryx and elephants. After the Depardon maelstrom, our joy at the success achieved (52,000 visitors, 20% of them foreign; overall, a 50% rise on 2005) was tinged with concerns: what future could we invent so as not to lose the impetus generated and the movement that had carried us along. This perplexity definitely has a starry-eyed “forever onwards and upwards” side to it.
